Serenity in LEGO

Be sure to check out the Light Up Fun pages for the real beauty of the Firefly Drive area.

But, beyond the battery-powered stuff, there is still a lot of detail work that went into the rear engine area. As you saw back on page two, the side covers on the engine open up to expose more of the firefly drive area. There is also what I assume to be some sort of sublight drive on the very aft of the ship.

The little barbell-shaped bits are a guilty addition - I needed them to help anchor the black ladder bits. They're not an authentic detail. In fact, the back of the ship is a bit chunkier than the real thing - but it was a necessary compromise for the lightup features to work properly.

Not all of the detail is frivolous, of course. This conning tower at the rear, as well as the tubing, is very close to the original model.

Here's a shot of the firefly drive extending past the tan ring just behind the covers. I had planned to have this area light up as well, but it caused too much havoc with the blue-and-white light ring just ahead of it. (Under the big ring)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the end result. There are a few things I may adjust over time - but for right now I'm content to leave things as they are.

The big question now, though - is what the heck am I going to do with Serenity now that she's built? I don't anticipate taking her apart any time soon - although my parts collection is now almost completely devoid of dark grey (not to mention light-up bricks.)

Oh well. I'm sure I'll think of something.
