The XR-Wing utilizes actual landing gear when landing on a planet's surface, a distinct improvement over the stock 7140 kit. (This oversight was corrected in the later edition 4502 model, it should be noted.) When retracted, the XR's gear also serves as an in-flight beacon and spotlight.

The rear landing gear are combined into the belly engine mounts, combing form, function, and structural engineering.
