Maul and Ric on card Ah, Star Wars: Episode One. I don't think we'll ever see the end of bootlegs for this movie. I wonder if they'll become as much of a peg-warmer as the real toys seem to to be these days.

This particular bootleg is called Space War. It comes blister carded on a 12" x 7" backboard, printed on the front only.

The line name has been changed from "Star Wars" to "Space War", obviously, but that didn't stop the bootleggers from absconding with a ton of licensed imagery for their card art. Not to mention the "Star Wars" font for their text.

To the left of the logo is a very recognizable cameo of Darth Maul. Not as obvious in the photos are an Episode 1 (naked) 3PO on the lower right, and the Return of the Jedi Star Destroyer and Death Star II directly under Maul.

The top right has is the standard child safety warning:

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - small parts. Not for Childern under 3 yrs.

The bottom left has a "Made in China" tag.

The toys themselves are mold re-castings of Kenner's Episode one figures. The arms are articulated, but the rest of the body is a two-piece assembly of the front and back of the figure. The scale has been changed from the 3.5" of the original to a hefty six inches, compatable with the eariler Galaxy Empire bootlegs.

Valorum and Mace Windu on card There are seven figures reported in this set:

The figures come either single carded or in two-pack mixtures. (Two pack mixes reported include Maul/Ole, Valorum/Windu, Sidious/3PO, and Maul/3PO.)

Since the figures are both recast and scaled up, one would expect the level of detail to be lessened. Interestingly, this doesn't seem to be the case. The castings, for the most part, are a decent reproduction of Kenner's offerings.

The colors have been altered slightly from the legal version, naturally. They're pretty close, but still variant enough to cause problems.

The detailing on the faces, however, is the stellar bootleg-esque feature of these toys. Somehow, the bootleggers managed to make all of the characters look very, very surprised.

I currently have the two-packs shown here. We'll take a closer look at each of the figures below.

Ric Ole detail Ric Ole

Ric comes with his helmet and pistol. The pistol is cast in sliver plastic, as is the helmet. The helmet, however, also has black and red detailing.

Darth Maul detail Darth Maul

Maul comes with his signature double-bladed lightsaber, packaged diagonally behind the toy. Like most accessories in this series, it is cast in silver plastic, with red paint for detailing.

I think the shocked expression on his face is a great addition to this bootleg. Nothing says "I've just been cut in two" like the wide, glassy eyes of Bootleg-Maul. The facial tatoos on bootleg-Maul also leave a bit to be desired.

Chancelor Valorum detail Chancelor Valorum

Never an exciting figure to begin with, the good Chancelor makes his transition to six-inch bootleg without incident.

He comes with a cerimonial staff, cast in dull silver with red and brown detailing.

Once again, the expression on the figures face makes this bootleg more than just so-so.

"Vote of No Confidence? Uh oh."

Mace Windu detail Mace Windu

Last, but not least, we have Mace Windu. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about this figure - even the expression seems to be subdued and normal looking.

The figure's lightsaber is cast in dull grey, with a bright blue blade.
