#1004 – I don’t want to go on the cart
Aug19
There’sย a much more depressing version of this strip. It was just too massive of a downer to use, though.
My initial plan was to have Donut die in Luka’s arms…the dialog in panel three was final dialog in panel four. But then the plot veered off in an unexpected direction – a direction that will explain a lot about Donut, his past, and stuff like that. I’m hoping to clear it all up between now and the start of the ’10 Advent season. We’ll see how that goes…
That was too close.
oh phew. I thought donut was a gonna….
Holed? not yet not yet
I dunno… that’s only sixty strips to unwind whatever’s up with this Donut. That said, I’m eager to see the result.
Am I the only one who got the Doctor Who joke about being mostly dead?
I think I get it….But not quite. Can you explain?

For those who don’t know Dr Who, it has to do with the Pandorica Box episode. Very well done so far, Chris, keep up the good work! ๐
@refysnode
hmmm… I’m sure that’s a 10th Doctor quote, am I correct? Journeys End maybe?
11th doctor, i think, he said, “she’s not dead, just mostly dead.” or something like that.
I thought he was quoting The Princess Bride…
@refysnode I assumed that was a Princess Bride joke, actually.
It would have been interesting if you had used the more depressing version, we could then show people that this Lego webcomic can do serious drama. I’m interested in where you are going to go from here though.
For the record: Princess Bride joke.
If you want to see the original version, I put a copy out on Flickr.
@Great Escaper: I’m not sure Brick House is the right place for “serious drama”, though – and I know I couldn’t pull it off consistently. So the change is really for the best.
The “only mostly dead” quote also appeared in Doctor Who — but, I’m pretty sure they were deliberately quoting The Princess Bride, just like Chris.
shouldn’t EL STUD’s name be in the big, bold lettering in panel 2?
@Snobbish Bob: Nah, one big El Stud per episode is enough.
I”ll optmistically assume that this dive into Donut’s past will still involve looking into “Faceless Clown’s” actions.
He’s not QUITE Dead yet.
Yeah, it’s from Princess Bride, which is a good movie, but Doctor Who copied Princess Bride.
“as we all know to blave means to bluff. so he was playing cards and he cheated!”
Did you finish making the depresing version? If so, can you post it somewhere so we can read it? You know, if we feel slightly weird.
@replica – Read the comments. I posted a link to it hours ago.
Well, I think in some way Luka actually managed to save him there, by making it too depressing for Chris to bear. GO LUKA! When characters manage to guilt-trip the author into letting someone live, well… that’s just epic. Real live epic, not “dude that hotdog is epic” ^_^
Never mind. I didn’t get it. I thought it was something else.
I just remembered a quote from a movie called the Princess Bride where some doctor/witch doctor guy said something about still being able to save some guy’s life because he was only “Mostly Dead”, completely dead meaning that nothing can be done to bring him back, so there’s still hope that Donut survives because he’s only “Mostly Dead!” ๐
EDIT: Once again, I’ve skipped the other comments and saw that Chris already said that it was a Princess Bride joke. I’m glad I’m not the only one who even knows that the movie exists, let alone like it!
Yea, that movie is pretty cool. I haven’t watched it in years though, so I didn’t remember the joke.
its a good movie i gat the joke right away! ๐
doesn’t EL STUD have a cape?
@joe: El Stud took off his cape after his drunken escapades back in #978- My guess is he got something on it.
I love EL STUD fancy caption! I think it would be better if the second EL STUD phrase was colorful and big, too… Great anyway. ๐
Ok. That was WAY too long a period of suspense. Long live the lord of Thyme!
Ah, so it was only a “flesh wound”…
