Kingdoms Advent: Day 24
Calendar Ends in 3…2…1….
…Hey! Is that SANTA?
…No.
Day Twenty Four: Wizard
The white beard had me fooled for a moment. But this guy dresses in blue, not red. And he’s far from jolly.
I had hoped the Kingdoms Advent would end with a bang…and I think it has. This Wizard figure is pretty sweet. So sweet, that he has to carry three wands. He’s just that badass.
So badass that he doesn’t even NEED the LEGO beard – he has a spare one printed on his face. (A face that he only shares with one other minifigure – the Lion King from the expensive and huge set 7946 – King’s Castle.)
And his shirt may be a plain blue, but his legs and hat are unique to this figure.
You can’t really get more Kingdoms Themed than a Wizard. So I call today’s set an unqualified win.
So. That’s it then. We’ve opened all the doors on the Kingdoms Advent. How did LEGO do?
Well, the way I see it, things broke down like this:
Super Wins (3): The Queen, The Prince, The Wizard
Wins (4) : Blacksmith, Dragon Knight, Catapult, Barmaid
Didn’t Suck (7): Sword in the stone, Jousting Dummy, Anvil set, Keg, Spear Cart, Lion Knight, Archer
Weak (8): Skeleton, Pig, Throne, Armor Stand, Owl, Alchemy Table, Armor Stand II, Cell Wall
Lame (2): Cook pot, Treasure Chest
So…just over half the calendar fell into the “Didn’t Suck or better” pile. Not the best ratio in the world, but I’ve certainly reviewed worse.
Was it worth the $35 price tag? Yeah…but mainly on the strength of the three “Super Win” figures and the other minis. The actual “building and construction” parts of this calendar were almost all sub-par.
Would I buy another Kingdoms themed calendar if they try again next year?
Of course.
I think we’ll see a different Theme appear to balance CITY in 2011, though. I’d love to see Atlantis or Pharaoh’s Quest get their shot at a calendar. Or SPACE. SPACE would be awesomesauce.
What about you guys? What do you want to see in the 2012 Advent Calendars?
I want something Spacey for sure, and I want to know some good reasons why LEGO wouldn’t use that.
Atlantis or Space would be great, but I wouldn’t mind another Kingdoms/Castle, so long as the non-people things are a bit better.
Speed Racer!
Oh, wait. Frankly, a “top minifigs of the past year” or “top minifigs of all time” Advent Calendar would be my fave. Yeah, I realize that licensed minifigs can’t be mixed in with other ones, but it’s a time for miracles and goodwill…
Christmas in SPAAACE!
That would be awesome, for sure. I see it now… Robo-Snowman! Christmas Pine in Cryo pod! The Santomatic Cloning machine~perfect for getting presents delivered to EVERY kid in EVERY star system! Oh, and of course, axe-wielding firebot. It’s more fun in space.
you mean 2011, right?
Two words: Westerners theme.
Lol. He has a sundial pocket watch. Like Fred Flinstone has a sundial wristwatch.
I’m with you 100% for a SPACE calendar. Although I do like the sound of a Pharaoh’s Quest calendar, if I don’t get all of the regular PQ sets.
Well, there’s always the new Alien Conquest line that comes out next year…

Doyle, I hate to inform you, but I’m 80% certain the print on the hat is the same from the Castle good wizard released as an impulse set and in the giant chess set. The color of the piece itself is different, but still… Also, wasn’t the whole point of Kingdoms that it was moving away from the whole fantasy theme?
That said, it’s a really sweet mini.
