On the Workbench

Take a sneak peek at the stuff I'm working on now!

With the latest round of Snack Sized work done, I was able to move on to my next Serenity-Inspired model. This time I'm working up my version of the Mule Hovercraft that was featured in the first half-hour or so of the film. Now that I own a copy of the Serenity DVD (and you should, too, if you don't already.) I've been able to freeze frame and watch for the changes from the concept art I found on line a while back.

One thing I noticed while freeze-framing the chase scene that might amuse some of you. Remember in my write up of "Mama Serenity" where I pointed out a design flaw I had found in the CGI model of Serenity they used for the Firefly tv show? The one about the support arm under the side engines having to twist in impossible ways? Well, I'm happy to report that they fixed that in the feature film. The support strut now has an elegant retraction to allow the engines to rotate, and a brace to allow it to support the engines in both normal flight and landing modes. Kudos to the design team!

Yes, I'm a geek. If you didn't realize that by now, I have to wonder what site you've been reading.

Anyway, back to my build on the Mule. After clearing away the debris from both the Serenity rebuild and the FSM Church, my workbench was open once again for a new project. So far I've put an hour or two into design work, and I'm about 75% or so done with the first pass. Here are a couple of shots of the work in progress.

My workbench area - I'm trying to figure out how to build the clamp on the front of the hovercraft at this point. I had a design in place (the grey and black bits at left) but they didn't look enough like a clamp. I'm thinking about going with a Bionicle claw option, so I grabbed some likely parts to see if anything inspired me.

Just a larger look at my work area. It's seldom this clean.

More photos on this project as they happen - or maybe it'll be time to move this project to it's own area, and start again on something new!
