2nd Annual Micropolis Building Challenge
It was just a normal day…until Professor Millennium’s Amazing Time Twister went haywire and started spewing the Sands of Time all over Micropolis! Now, instead of a busy CITY environment, entire blocks have been swept through time! Cliff top castles stand across the street from Western Saloons! Space Ports vie for attention with the Bus Stop! Viking longships hunt for a slip in the Micropolis waterfront! It’s mass chaos….and YOU can help build it!
Yes, it’s time for the 2nd Annual Micropolis Building Challenge brought to you by TwinLUG and Reasonably Clever!
This year the theme is “The Sands of Time.” Your task is to build a part of the city of Micropolis using the newly updated 1.1 standard. The twist is that you don’t have to build in the standard “CITY” theme – thanks to the Time Twister you can build in any theme you want…provided you still follow the Micropolis Standard. (Yes, this means your Western Dude Ranch needs to have a modern road and sidewalk. Deal with it.)
The Rules:
- Models MUST conform to the Micropolis 1.1 Standard or they will be disqualified.
- MODELS MUST CONFORM TO THE MICROPOLIS 1.1 STANDARD OR THEY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
- Virtual models are not allowed for this contest.
- Models posted on-line prior to 5/14/2010 are not eligible for this contest.
- International entries are welcome
- All entries will be judged from a single pool. You may only enter ONE model per person.
- CITY-themed entries are encouraged, but there are also three special building sub-themes that can win prizes this year.
- Twisted Time – Modules themed from the past or future (Space, Western, Caveman, etc.).
- 1.1 Showoff – Modules built using the new Bluff and/or Waterfront portions of the 1.1 standard.
- Time Twister Explosion – Modules showing the Time Twister disaster as it happens
- It is possible for a single model to win mulitple prizes! For example, the Best in Show might also earn the Sands of Time theme award.
- MODELS MUST CONFORM TO THE MICROPOLIS 1.1 STANDARD OR THEY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Discussion (26) ¬
Is 1.1 Micropolis Standard the same as minifigure scale?
@Samuel: Not even remotely – this contest is in “Microscale”.
The standard is here: http://twinlug.com/micropolis-micro-city-standard/
(You can also click on any of the links above to get to the standard.)
You might also want to look at last year’s contest and related entries. Those are posted here.
I’ll try and make this a bit more clear on the main page.
Thanks for clearing that up for me!
while once again i dont entend on entering am i corect in saying that there is no piece small enough in the scale to represent a person.
@Replica: Correct – individuals are too small to show up at this scale.
Actually, I have seen lots of Micropolis’s with two 1×1 round plates stacked on eachother to represent minifigures.
@refysnode: While there are plenty of micro scale creations that do use that representation for people, the TwinLUG Micropolis standard does not. For example, cars in this standard are a jumper plate with a 1×1 tile on the top. Have a look at the actual specification for more details: http://twinlug.com/micropolis-micro-city-standard/
I’m quite interested in contending in this year’s contest, but am I correct to assume that those who aren’t able to make their way to BrickWorld this year will be disqualified? My understanding of this particular part of the entrance rules is a bit foggy, and any correction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
No, you don’t need to be at Brickworld! If you happen to be there, that’s great, but it won’t have any bearing on the judges or your score. (It’s just a fun plus!)
I’ll clarify the rules above to make sure that’s more clear. Thanks for asking!
Very cool! Your clarification just made my day! While I’ll have to work like a dog to catch up with the rest of the contenders, I know I’ll have a bucket full of fun anyway. Thanks again for clearing my mind about the details.
Due to the confusion over the entry requirements, we’ve decided to extend this content through July 24th. More time to build!
Are minifigs directly prohibited from our builds? For instance, can we use minifigs for forced perspective, or only miniscale objects? Thanks for you time.
They’re not prohibited – you could use one for a giant or something, I suppose. But they’ll never be “people scale” in a Micropolis build.
Also, you’d be unable to use forced perspective – the module has to work from all edges according to the standard.
So a Lego monkey could be used to represent King Kong?
Sure. Or a LEGO Octopus could be a giant version of the species.
Is it permissible to post photos of your model on your website, or should that wait until after judging is completed?
@Dave: Feel free to post&host wherever you’d like. The only stipulation was that it can’t be a model that was on-line prior to the start of the contest.
Awesome, thanks!
i can’t open the file that has the bacik starter plate thing
is it not ok to use models with lego digital designer im just asking becos its so hard to find all the bricks i need i have like 3 boxes full of lego and those are big boxes
@mani – you need only some black, grey and white tiles for streets and pavements. The rest of module are simple bricks, plates and technic bricks.
@Mani: Sorry – this contest is for real-world models only, as stated in the rules.
Does the street displacement has to be exactly the same. I mean in the 1.1 Micropolis Standard there are 2 streets, on one corner. If my model only has one street would i be disqualified?
@Yoz: I’m afraid you’ll need to follow the standard exactly. The idea behind Micropolis is that you can join your module up with any other module…that means the streets need to be there.
Now that the deadline for entries has passed, it’s time for the judges to make their votes – we’ll be announcing the winners soon – hopefully next week sometime.
